15+ years of blogging knowledge, disasters, and successes
My journey began in 2005 when I first discovered the term “affiliate marketing” and ordered a how-to guide on building an income online. Looking back, I can’t believe how much the industry has changed, and yet, the key fundamentals have stayed the same.
I launched my first website, and still remember the day my first affiliate income payment arrived in the mail (yes, they actually mailed a check). I ran to the bank and deposited the money without thinking that this was the beginning of things to come… But then career/office life took over, and I left my affiliate site to idle. I had a new degree and corporate life was calling so I made the decision to sell the site.
MLM (Multi-Level-Marketing)
I got married and discovered new opportunities
2010 I got married, and soon after welcomed a beautiful daughter in 2011, and another in 2013. My wife, a former teacher assistant, wanted to focus on being a mom but still be able to bring in an income to the family. Enter the MLM. The very acronym makes some people cringe, while others see the opportunities.
I was the latter, I knew that I could apply my knowledge and skills to dominate the MLM that had just started. My wife spent countless hours and thousands of dollars on tradeshows and hosted parties selling jewelry. To be honest, the product was top quality and new to the market. We built a website to aid in sales and with my website knowledge and my wife’s product knowledge we set out to dominate – and we did! We ended up getting a call from the head associate in the country asking us how we were managing top sales, we were #1 in the country!
MLM (Multi-Level-Marketing) continued
Disaster strikes, and moving on
It seemed like only days after a big product reveal and an exciting AGM that there were signs of trouble in the hen house. A few “sales associates” complained about a late payment. Days later the owners confirm that they are working on payments, and not to worry. Days later again, a desk employee confirmed our worst fear: Bankruptcy!
Overnight, everything disappeared and we had no control over it! Our MLM, which we placed our trust and money in, just went from record sales to out-of-business. Months later, we learn the company was being acquired by another MLM. Our website was strong, and we could easily adapt to our new MLM parent company, but the same could not be said for hundreds of others.
Marketing Expands
My wife and I stuck with our new MLM parent company for about a year after the acquisition, but honestly, the family atmosphere and momentum were gone. We parted ways, and I began to focus on my other websites. Some were affiliate based, while others were ads based. I was able to grow these into sites that provided healthy 5-figure incomes with little effort. I also began to intensively educate myself on marketing techniques. I joined Mater-Classes taught by the leading experts in online marketing and e-commerce. This isn’t the outdated stuff taught in a university classroom, this is real-world, real-time, cutting-edge information (some still in beta testing phases). The knowledge I was given was like drinking from a fire hose and totally worth every penny.
Armed with the new information, my business partner and I set up an Amazon Ecommerce Agency. Together, we help companies list, grow, and thrive on the Amazon marketplace. SEO tactics from Search Engines, and SEO of the Amazon Marketplace are completely different; and with expert training, you can dominate even the biggest competitors.
Then, a family member asked about getting an online site up and running. She had no experience with online websites, e-commerce, coding etc. That is when I started to think about all the information and experience I had and wasn’t able to share. I pondered the idea of a blog for a while, and in 2023 I decided it was time to launch blogBIGGER.
